Worklessness and Regeneration

Areas of disadvantage tend to have high rates of worklessness, so solutions need to be local, reflecting the kind of jobs people are likely to be able to get, and the individuals living in the area and their individual problems.

Success initiatives around worklessness require an understanding of the client’s journey and the joining up of services from a range of agencies. This will enable them to access a job and progress and develop skills when in work.

Improving employability has to be linked to improving job opportunities. Engaging with employers can include encouraging existing employers to sign up to employment initiatives such as, pre recruitment training linked to job interviews.

It is important to intervene before people become unemployed through ill health or lack of skills. It is equally important to initiate support work early where prolonged unemployment is likely. Programmes looking at those people farthest away from employment need long term investment and commitment from partners.
